Overview:
Participants will learn the basics about technology ethics that could be used across a variety platforms – from 15 years ago when bulletin boards and e-mail were new to emerging social networking , VoIP, and texting platforms. Factors in making ethical decisions in the rapid asynchronous and synchronous environment will be addressed, as well as ethical issues in assistive technology evaluation and use. Case studies will allow attendees to apply learning objectives in a virtual environment.
Objectives:
At the completion of this program, participants will be able to:
1) Define the basic essentials of technology ethics (regardless of the platform, format, or application)
2) Employ technology ethics in clinical rehabilitation practice and assessment
3) Explain ethical decision-making in the use of technology
About the Presenters:
| Mary Barros-Bailey, PhD, CRC has presented and published extensively nationally and internationally on the topic of ethics in rehabilitation counseling practice with over 60 of those presentations specific to technology ethics. She chaired IARP's 2006 revision of its Code of Ethics, was the Chair of the Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification (CRCC) Ethics Committee from 2005-2007, and on CRCC's task force to revise the updated 2010 Code of Professional Ethics. Mary is in private practice in Boise, Idaho as a bilingual rehabilitation counselor, vocational expert, and life care planner. | ||
| Vilia Tarvydas, PhD is a professor and program coordinator of the Graduate Programs in Rehabilitation at the University of Iowa. She is director of the new UI Institute on Ethics in Disability Policy and Rehabilitation Practice in the Colleges of Education and Law. Her scholarly works and numerous national and international presentations have concentrated on the areas of applied ethics, ethical decision-making and professional standards. She has published extensively in these areas. She teaches graduate level courses on ethics and professional issues at the University of Iowa (UI) at both the master's and doctoral level, where she is also a senior research scientist with the UI College of Law's Center on Law, Health Policy and Disability. |
