General Session: Raising Awareness: Cultural Competency and Rehabilitation Counseling

Through the use of experiential exercises, dialogue and self-exploration, participants will have a heightened awareness of how their own cultural values, biases, norms and stereotypes can influence the counseling relationship.  African American values (Nguzo Saba) and experiences (Maafa) will be introduced as a means of exploring ways in which cultural concepts can be integrated within rehabilitation counseling.

General Session - International Disability Management: Issues, Resources, Barriers to Effective Practice
1:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.                            

The practice of effective disability management is becoming a competitive necessity for employers globally.  However, cultural, socio-economic, healthcare, educational, and legal/regulatory issues can critically impact the development, delivery, and outcome of disability management interventions.  An international panel of experts will identify the current status, resources, professional issues, and implementation of disability management practice in their countries.  Strategies will be discussed, including research, education, certification, and technical assistance to promote effective international disability management growth.

Panel moderated by Norman Hursh, ScD, CRC, CVE, Director of Vocational Rehabilitation Services, CDMSC and Boston University
