Vocational Rehabilitation Consultant

This position located in Portland, ME is responsible for development, implementation and maintenance of cost effective rehabilitation programs as a vocational expert providing consultation and counseling services, interpretive review of medical and other data, and coordination of a wide range of services aimed at returning disability claimants to gainful employment.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Develop, implement and coordinate vocational rehabilitation plans of action.
2. Includes analyzing rehabilitation potential on a case by case basis; facilitate returns to work, job placements, terminations, denials, settlements; provide vocational counseling.
3. Provide vocational counseling, assesses claimants to determine feasibility for services.
4. Develop and implement training programs for Disability Claim Representatives to screen and select suitable rehabilitation cases and thus improve case management.
5. Disseminates vocational information in periodic seminars; interprets vocational information on a 1-1 basis as needed.
6. Analyze and interpret claim and rehabilitation data, develop statistics for and provide consultation to client companies and management. Recommend programs, activities and policy changes that will reduce claim costs. Plan and perform vocational rehabilitative services with selected claimants and supervise services contracted to private rehabilitation companies. Advise Director of opportunities to improve contracts to strengthen rehabilitation potential.
7. Participate in sales programs by making rehabilitation presentations to existing and potential accounts. Develop information keyed to specific account’s needs, policy requirements and claims experience. Present and interpret information about the UNUM rehabilitation program.
8. Develop, implement, evaluate and modify rehabilitation procedures and materials.
9. Develop forms that gather, organize and document rehabilitation and related claims information. Supervise documentation of rehabilitation and related claims activities and prepares reports to management.
10. May perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
• Masters Degree in Rehabilitation or a related field, rehabilitation certification or certification eligible
• Three years direct rehabilitation management experience.
• Highly skilled in analysis of data, counseling techniques, interpersonal relationships, medical and vocational knowledge, application and interpretation of insurance and legal information, oral and written communication.
• Must be able to coordinate vocational rehabilitation, comply with contract requirements and develop clear understanding from the claims area of all contract provisions.
• Must be able to travel as needed to meet with claimants and accounts/policyholders.
