Vocational Counselor

May 9, 2008 - mcmc seeks a qualified vocational counselor for work in the New England area.

Reports To: Vocational Manager 
Location: New England
FLSA Status: Exempt
Type: Per diem

Summary:  Broad-based activities in vocational case management including assessment, planning, and coordinating vocational rehab services and facilitating the deliver of these services. Vocational expert services including job analysis, labor market analysis and employability opinions are also required.

Responsibilities: 
• Continuously research, visit and evaluate vocational resources for use in managing cases (assessment, training and placement).
• Establish working relationship with these resources and communicate general service needs as well as specific client needs to them. 
• Develop and maintain vocational expertise in terms of assessing skill and education levels, using the DOT and analyzing transferable skills.
• Stay informed as to evolving legal and ethical issues surrounding confidentiality and protect client rights in this and other relevant areas.
• Maintain familiarity with medical terminology, treatment procedures and conditions treated and avoid working in areas beyond one’s expertise.
• Interview clients to obtain accurate histories including relevant personal, medical, educational and vocational factors.
• Assess clinical and vocational information to establish rehabilitation potential, plan counseling strategies and develop rehabilitation plans.
• Maintain understanding of physical and psychological aspects of illnesses and disabling conditions as well as factors in coping, positive adjustment and health promotion.
• Advocate for client needs, once established
• Assess necessity and reasonableness of vocational plans and understands criteria for approval
• Identify opportunities for appropriate vocational alternatives.
• Monitor and evaluates costs for VR and benefits of case management process.
• Evaluate on going changes in the labor market relative to adequacy and cost of training.
• Maintain an understanding of case management philosophy and principles and the evolving role of the case management.
• Maintain knowledge of relevant legislation including state laws relating to work injury, disability and handicapped discrimination as well as federal laws such as ADA and FMLA.
• Understand the vocational implications of impairment and issues governing the provision of vocational rehabilitation services.
• Maintain familiarity with assistant devices and adaptive equipment.
• Maintain an understanding of the components of a client support system allowing for maximum client independence and maximum functioning.

Experience/Education/Certifications

* Masters level education with relevant rehabilitation experience
• CRC and/or CDMS Certification
• Experience can include but not limited to workers’ compensation, disability management or community counseling or job placement
• Experience functioning as a Vocational Expert in the context of on or more benefit systems
